Unprecedented image quality
Image quality throughout the zoom range and focusing distances. 2 aspherical elements, one XA (extreme aspherical) element, ensure high resolution across the entire image area. 2 ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements, 2 Super ED glass elements and one ED aspherical element minimise chromatic aberration, and Sony's Nano AR Coating II eliminates glare and ghosting. High-performance 1.4x and 2x teleconverters available.
Sophisticated G-Master bokeh
Beautiful G Master bokeh is achieved thanks to advanced optical design, an F2.8 aperture and the new 11-blade aperture unit. An XA element manufactured with 0.01 micron surface precision suppresses onion-rimmed bokeh, and the aperture unit delivers natural circular bokeh. Close-up bokeh is also fantastic, with a minimum focusing distance of just 0.4m (1.32ft) at 70mm and 0.82m (2.69ft) at 200mm.
Fast, accurate AF for creative shooting
Four of Sony's original XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors offer high thrust efficiency, which increases AF speed by up to 4x, compared to the previous model. When following an oncoming runner during a close-distance run, zoom tracking is improved by approx. 30% compared to the previous model, significantly increasing the chances of achieving the desired capture.
Professional film capability
The latest lens technology reduces focus breathing, focus shift while zooming, and axis shift while zooming. XD Linear Motors and a new opening drive unit contribute to quiet operation. This lens also features independent control rings for focusing, zooming and iris, with a click on/off switch for the aperture ring. Sony's Linear Response MF function ensures responsive direct manual focus control.
Lightest in its class
This lens delivers excellent optical quality and AF in the world's lightest F2.8 70-200mm zoom lens. XD linear motors and magnesium alloy body components result in an overall weight of just 1045 grams; approx. 29% lighter than the previous model. The design improves balance and the constant length of the cylinder contributes to easy handling.
Professional control and reliability
Flexible focus control is made possible by functions such as Full-time DMF, Linear Response MF and Focus Range Limiter. An actionable click aperture ring and iris lock gives you more exposure control. MODE 1, MODE 2 and MODE 3 optical image stabilisation ensures sharp images, and the dust and moisture resistant design, coupled with the fluorine-coated front element, maximise reliability in harsh environments.
