Sigma introduces a new zoom lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras with an aperture of f/1.8 throughout the zoom range: the DC Art 17-40mm f/1.8.
With prime-like optical performance and video-friendly design and functionality, its wide-angle to normal focal range means a lighter kit without compromising image quality.
Design and Performance
The lens has a total of 17 elements in 11 groups, four of which are aspherical and four are special low dispersion to minimize flare and ghosting, as well as suppressing various aberrations. This results in optical performance that matches or surpasses that of other Sigma Art lenses, including the 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art lens. Together with its rounded 11-blade diaphragm, the design promotes sharpness and wide, smooth bokeh when used wide open.
Aperture
In addition to the maximum aperture of f/1.8, the lens also maintains a minimum focusing distance of 28cm throughout the zoom range. It achieves a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.8 at its longest focal length, increasing depth of field and versatility in tight spaces.
Video Production
Designed with video creation in mind, the lens's bright f/1.8 aperture and wide-angle to normal zoom range make it a versatile tool, ideal for both single-shot and continuous shooting setups. The internal zoom design maintains the full length during use, making it easy to balance on the stabilizers. The design also suppresses focus breathing for smooth movement throughout the focal range. Autofocus from Sigma's high-speed, high-response linear actuator remains quiet and accurate, while manual focus is enhanced with click and lock mechanisms.
