A myriad of specialized elements are incorporated into the optical design, which help suppress spherical aberrations, color distortions, and distortions to produce sharp, color-accurate images. A ZERO coating is also featured, which controls flare and ghosting to improve contrast when working in bright and backlit conditions. Complementing the optics is a film and stills-compatible autofocus system, which achieves fast, smooth and quiet focusing performance and a maximum magnification of 0.25x throughout the zoom range to suit working with close-up subjects. In addition, the lens is weather-sealed to allow it to be used in harsh weather conditions.
