RICOH GR IV Monochrome Compact Camera
RICOH GR IV Monochrome Compact Camera
The RICOH GR IV Monochrome builds on the RICOH GR IV, which completely and legitimately evolves the fundamental concept of the GR series — the core values of a camera, including high image quality, fast response and portability — by incorporating a new image sensor dedicated to monochrome photography.
By eliminating the color filter used to acquire color information, as well as the interpolation process required to generate color images, the camera is able to fully exploit the capabilities of the high-performance GR lens, offering refined rendering and rich tonal gradation. In addition, the built-in red filter allows for more distinct monochrome photos, while new Image Control options dedicated to monochrome photography provide deep and diverse monochrome expressions.
Design dedicated to monochrome
In search of the ultimate monochrome expression, the camera was recently equipped with a dedicated monochrome CMOS image sensor, without an anti-aliasing (AA) filter, equivalent in size to APS-C, capable of producing high-definition images with approximately 25.74 million effective pixels. Unlike monochrome images produced with a general color image sensor
—in which each pixel receives light through one of the red (R), green (G) or blue (B) color filters, the information is interpolated to generate a color image and the result is then converted to monochrome — each pixel of the sensor dedicated to monochrome captures the object's brightness information. Because it directly captures light information entering the lens without interpolation processing, it enables crisp monochrome rendering with rich tonal gradation, and also makes it possible to create works that emphasize graininess effects by taking advantage of high sensitivity performance.
Red filter integrated into the lens
A red filter that can be turned on/off with a single operation is integrated into the lens. By allowing only wavelengths of red light to pass through, it enables dramatic rendering—for example, by darkening the tones of a blue sky to increase contrast with white clouds, or by making red objects brighter so that they stand out more clearly.
Support for multiple monochrome expressions
Camera features Image Control options dedicated to monochrome
to allow a wide range of monochromatic expressions.
"Solid" utilizes a rigid tonal curve to express a crisp, clean look and renders edges with refined clarity. "Grainy", characterized by a strong graining effect, offers a finish reminiscent of silver halide prints and printed materials, avoiding complete saturation of highlights and preventing shadows from being completely black, while producing a graininess that is clearly visible even on smart devices.
Carefully crafted exterior design
To evoke the primitive and essential world of black and white photography,
Unifying colour and texture, the magnesium alloy body, as well as the shutter button and ring cap, are finished in matte black. The understated shine, deep texture and soft touch make the special nature of the GR immediately apparent. In addition, the GR logo on the front has a semi-gloss black finish, with a distinct sheen to the body finish. In addition, the lighting of the power button has also been changed to white. A
Monochromatic aesthetics are expressed throughout the design.
High-speed electronic shutter up to 1/16000s
In addition to the conventional mechanical shutter, the camera is equipped with an electronic shutter that allows you to shoot at higher shutter speeds. The shutter speed can be increased by up to 1/16000s, which is effective for creative work that takes advantage of the high sensitivity characteristics of the monochrome sensor in bright conditions, and for situations where it is desirable to shoot with the aperture open even in bright environments.
Note: This function will also be added to the GR IV via a firmware update (to be released after the launch of the RICOH GR IV Monochrome).
Wireless connectivity and GR WORLD app
A new dedicated GR WORLD app has been developed to simplify the experience of shooting with GR series cameras. This app allows for the transfer of files from the camera to the mobile device, remote control of the shutter and the transfer of location data.
Both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are used for easy and stable connection with mobile devices.
