Waste Management

Why is e-waste management important?

Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) contains highly hazardous substances such as lead, mercury, cadmium and several other toxic substances. If not properly managed, these substances can contaminate soil, water and air, posing a serious threat to human health and ecosystems.

By recycling, toxic materials are kept out of landfills, thus protecting the health of humans and wildlife. Materials used in electronics manufacturing are harmful to the environment if not disposed of properly.

According to the APA - Portuguese Environment Agency, urban waste is defined as:

1. "waste from undifferentiated collection and selective collection from households, including paper and cardboard, glass, metals, plastics, bio-waste, wood, textiles, packaging, waste electrical and electronic equipment, waste batteries and accumulators, as well as bulky waste, including mattresses and furniture;

2. "waste from undifferentiated collection and selective collection from other sources, if it is similar to household waste in its nature and composition."

Focusing on the core business of TROPHYFLASH LDA | ESTUDIOPT two types of waste stand out - Electrical and Electronic Waste (WEEE) and Batteries and Accumulators (PEA).

WEEE is any EEE that is disposed of by its holder. Included are all components, sub-assemblies and consumables that are an integral part of the equipment at the time it is disposed of.

EEE are equipment that, in order to function properly, are dependent on electric current or magnetic fields, as well as all those that generate, transfer and measure these currents and fields.

TROPHYFLASH Lda | ESTUDIOPT's main activity is the sale of these products and, therefore, assumes responsibility for the environmental impacts they cause when they reach the end of their life cycle. In this way, a container provided by ERP - European Recycling Platform - is made available in the physical store, so that both WEEE and AEP are properly disposed of and recycled.

TROPHYFLASH | ESTUDIOPT is also reusing the protective packaging and fillers that come from suppliers using them as the main source of packaging material.  We are aware that this practice helps to reduce the amount of materials needed to manufacture new products, reducing environmental pollution.

We believe that any consumption-based business, including ours, still cannot be fully sustainable within the current limits of Business Sustainability. We are working to ensure that we are minimizing our impact by doing everything we can.
