The Beauty Dish is a reflector to modify the light of the flash. The small reflector centered on the inside returns the light from the flash to the large reflector, avoiding a hot light spot in the center.
It provides a very characteristic illumination with a mix of hard and soft light. It defines the lines of the face well through the shadows.
To achieve a good effect, the Beauty Dish has to be positioned very close to the subject to be photographed, at a distance equal to twice its diameter and in a higher position than the camera. This way the light is focused and the shadows are well defined, but soft. The transition between shadows and light is very fast.
