The FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS is Sony's first α lens to zoom up to 800mm, with a range ideal for distant subjects and for creating telephoto compression. Fast, accurate AF lets you capture subjects that can't be reached up close, such as birds and wildlife, and draw them into full framing. The internal zoom design minimizes the shift of the center of gravity for smooth handling.
Go the distance with the first α lens: 400-800mm super telephoto zoom lens
The FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS is the first α lens to cover a super-telephoto range from 400mm to 800mm. An optional 2x teleconverter can increase the maximum focal length to 1600mm. Internal zoom means that the distance to the lens does not change and that the centre of gravity stays within a small range for stable handling. The smooth and easy rotation of the zoom ring allows for precise zooming, while careful design prevents accidental changes in focal length.
State-of-the-art optical design delivers high resolution and natural bokeh throughout the zoom range
Six ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements effectively control chromatic aberration. Glare and ghosting in backlit conditions are also completely suppressed. An 11-blade circular aperture helps create a beautiful spherical effect on exceptionally smooth and creamy background bokeh when shooting with a narrow depth of field.
Fast, accurate AF captures even fast-moving subjects
Two precision linear motors drive the lens's focus group for fast, accurate focusing. Tracking easily tracks at full speed in 120fps bursts of the α9 III, and remains unchanged, even when zoomed in, so important moments aren't missed. A focus range limiter (FULL/10m-NEAR/∞-8m) can be used to optimize operation for different subject distances. Focus breathing is suppressed for better cinematic quality, and quiet operation expands the range of possible applications.
Solid mount for handheld or tripod-mounted shooting
The FE 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS with optical stabilisation extends up to 800mm, but weighs just 2475g and can be used handheld without vibration-induced blur. Stabilization is even better with a α structure that includes image stabilization. With a tripod, the foot of the stand can be quickly rotated to horizontal or vertical orientation. Durable components, optimized balance and a non-removable foot maximize reliability and performance.
High-level control and reliability for any situation
Three focus hold buttons with 90° increments around the body allow easy access in any orientation. You can assign other functions to the buttons as needed. Internal zoom and a dust/moisture-resistant design maximize reliability. The front element has a fluorine coating that repels contaminants and simplifies lens cleaning. The lens hood has a new design with a lock button and a filter opening for easy use.
