XD motors for fast and accurate AF
Two XD (extreme dynamics) linear motors deliver fast, accurate AF and reliable tracking, offering the best of modern camera bodies and ensuring accurate focusing of fast sports and wildlife subjects. A new control algorithm contributes to fast and quiet positioning of the large focus group, with minimal lag and vibration.
Large XA element improves image quality
G Master's excellent optical design maintains extremely high contrast right to the edges of the image. The newly developed large XA (extreme spherical) element and three fluorite elements suppress chromatic aberration, sometimes a problem in telephoto lenses, delivering stunning resolution and detail across the entire image area.
Beautiful G Master bokeh
In addition to featuring a new large-aperture XA (extreme spherical) element with extremely high surface precision, each lens is individually calibrated to control spherical aberration, so that the G Master's beautiful bokeh is optimally balanced with high resolution. An 11-blade circular aperture adds to the beauty of the lens's smooth bokeh.
Longer range with 1.4x/2.0x teleconverters
Optional high-performance 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters are available. The 2.0x teleconverter extends the lens's focal length to 1200mm (1800mm on an APS-C body) with F8 maximum aperture, while maintaining outstanding optical quality and AF speed and accuracy.
Glare resistant for superior clarity
Sony's original Nano AR coating, coating on critical interior surfaces and other refined finishes minimise internal reflections, making the lens highly resistant to glare and ghosting that affect image sharpness. The results are crisp and defined, even in low-light conditions.

Lightweight and balanced for easy shooting
Low weight of just 3040 grams and sublime balance thanks to technology inherited from SEL400F28GM, allowing you to take full advantage of the excellent optical performance, even when shooting handheld or with a monopod. With a lightweight and compact E-mount structure, the center of gravity is perfectly located for smooth and precise panning.
Rigid magnesium alloy body components
The high-rigidity magnesium alloy used on the exterior of the lens barrel, tripod mount, and critical interior components offers the dual benefits of excellent durability and low weight, great advantages when shooting in demanding environments and situations.
Fluorine front element coating
The front lens element features a fluorine coating that repels water, oil, and other contaminants, while also making it easy to clean any contaminants or fingerprints from the lens surface.

This lightweight and durable carbon fiber lens hood also features a coated interior that maximizes effectiveness in blocking light that can affect image quality.

With the demands of professional use in mind, the number of screws used to secure the stand has been increased and further improvements have been made to ensure maximum rigidity and reliability.
Continuous DMF
When the FULL TIME DMF switch is ON, manual focus is automatically activated when the focus ring is operated, even in AF-C mode. This feature can be used to correct focus when autofocus selects the wrong subject, for example. It's also a great way to sharpen focus after an initial autofocus, when autofocus is disabled by partially pressing the shutter button.
3-mode Optical SteadyShot
Optical image stabilisation makes it easy to capture sharp images hand-held at super-telephoto focal lengths. MODE 2 offers ideal stabilisation for panning shooting, while MODE 3 offers improved viewfinder stabilisation, allowing for easier framing in dynamic sports or wildlife scenes. 5-axis stabilization available on compatible α frames.
Linear and natural manual focus response
Linear Response MF ensures that the focus ring responds directly and linearly to subtle control when focusing manually. The action of the focus ring rotation corresponds directly to a change in focus, so the control is very responsive and precise.
Four customizable focus hold buttons
Customisable focus hold buttons are available in four locations, for easy access when shooting in any direction. Focus hold buttons can be customised via a camera menu that allows you to assign other functions, such as Eye AF, as needed.
Versatile function ring
A practical and versatile function ring can be set to a preset focus, an assigned function control, or no function at all via the mode dial.
Smooth electric focus
If the function ring mode switch is set to FUNCTION and the electric focus function is assigned, rotating the ring will allow the lens to focus smoothly in the specified direction at a speed determined by the degree of rotation. Electric focus is useful for achieving smooth pull-focus effects when shooting movies.
Instant focus at a preset point
After a preset focus point is stored using the SET button, turning the function ring will allow access to the preset focus point if PRESET mode is active. This is an ideal way to preset focus points for fast-paced sports action, for example. It works in both AF and MF modes and is not affected by focus range limiter settings.
Fast switching between full-frame and APS-C
If the function ring mode switch is set to FUNCTION and the APS-C/full-frame activation function is assigned, the function ring can be rotated to instantly switch between APS-C and full-frame viewing angles (supported by the latest α9 software version).
Input filter slot
A filter slot accepts a standard 40.5mm ND filter and other filter types, as well as an optional VF-DCPL1 circular polarizing filter. The VF-DCPL1 circular polarizing filter can be rotated for optimal effect while installed on the lens.
Focus range limiter for faster focusing
A focus range limiter switch allows you to limit the lens's autofocus range to between 4.5 and 15 meters, 15 meters and infinity, or unlimited full-range autofocus. This speeds up autofocus in certain situations, preventing the lens from focusing on objects outside the target range.
