Its extremely wide perspective is complemented by a maximum aperture of f/1.8 for excellent low-light performance, and its impressively compact form factor makes it a portable and versatile option for everything, from casual photos to staged architectural photos.
Fast design and refined optics
As a G Master lens, optical performance is prioritized, and the 14mm f/1.8 emphasizes both sharpness and bokeh quality for versatility regardless of subject distance or aperture setting. Two XA (extreme spherical) elements, along with a standard spherical element, promote high sharpness throughout the aperture range, even when working at the bright f/1.8 position. Spherical elements feature superior surface accuracy for effective control over astigmatism, field curvature, coma, distortion, and other spherical aberrations for highly accurate rendering and low distortion. The combination of multiple spherical elements, along with sophisticated focusing motors, promotes a truly compact and lightweight design, especially for such a wide focal length. One Super ED element and two extra-low dispersion elements are featured in the lens design and help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for enhanced clarity and color neutrality. Nano AR Coating II has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in bright lighting conditions. This upgraded coating is best suited for larger curved elements and is especially suited to minimizing internal reflections.
Excellence in low light conditions
Rare for an ultrawide, the maximum aperture of f/1.8 is a useful feature for working in low-light conditions, such as for astrophotography applications and when making time-lapses where shorter shutter speeds are required. The optical design has been optimized for wide-open shooting; the built-in high-curvature XA elements minimize sagittal flare for a cleaner, more accurate night sky and spot light source rendering.
Fast and accurate focusing
An XD Linear Motor system uses two separate motors to provide fast, quiet, and accurate autofocus and tracking performance. This design also contributes to a more natural and intuitive Linear Response manual focus control, and an AF/MF switch is located in the lens barrel for quick focus mode switching. The internal focus design offers a more responsive focusing performance and maintains a consistent overall lens length during operation. The minimum focal length of 9.8" is suitable for creating dynamic close-up images. Despite its ultra-wide field of view, the minimum close focal length and bright maximum aperture allow for the creation of shallow depth-of-field images characterized by a strong close-up subject and a soft background.
Reliable Construction
In addition to exceptional optics, G Master lenses are also known for durable and reliable physical constructions, including extensive weather sealing and intuitive designs for easy operation. In addition, specifically for this 14mm f/1.8, it features a unique compact and lightweight design, measuring 3.3 x 3.9" and weighing just one pound. The physical aperture ring can be cleared for smooth, quiet aperture switching to benefit video applications. The ring also incorporates a locking "A" position for use in automated exposure modes. A focus hold button is present on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and quick access to select programmable settings. The integrated lens hood in the shape of a petal helps prevent stray light from causing the lens to flare and also offers some physical protection to the front element. The filter mount is built into the back of the lens, inside the lens mount, and accepts cut gel filters and a filter cut-out model is included. The dust- and moisture-sealed design allows you to work better in harsh conditions, and the rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures. Fluorine-coated front and rear elements resist dust, moisture and fingerprints and are easy to clean.
