A compact and lightweight ultra-telephoto prime, the 500mm f5.6 DG DN OS Sports Sony-E takes advantage of a rugged construction and advances in optical design and stabilization to deliver professional-grade performance when used hand-held and in the most challenging environments. The lens's quiet, precise high-speed autofocus complements the optical performance, allowing photographers to freeze the action and produce eye-catching images in sports, wildlife, and aviation settings.
Body and Optical Design
Sigma's enhanced optical design places unique low-dispersion convex elements in front of the lens to achieve a compact, lightweight lens construction and high optical performance with excellent aberration correction. With a total of 20 lens elements organized into 14 groups, including three FLD (fluorescent light filter) elements and two SLD (low dispersion glass) elements, The lens effectively prevents flare and ghosting and promotes image clarity. The lens body is constructed with thermally stable composite and magnesium for a rugged construction that is resistant to dust and splashes. The front element also features a water- and oil-repellent coating to protect the lens from debris.
OS2 Optical Stabilizer Algorithm
Sigma's OS2 optical stabilization algorithm provides up to 5 stops of image stabilization. Combined with the compact form factor, the operating system makes the lens suitable for portable use and offers users the luxury of shooting at slower shutter speeds without sacrificing image sharpness. Two stabilization modes are available, Mode 1 - for general photography - and Mode 2 - features Sigma's Intelligent OS algorithm. Ideal for panoramic shots and sports capture, the intelligent operating system provides effective image stabilization even when the camera is moved vertically or diagonally, regardless of horizontal and vertical orientation.
HLA autofocus system
The HLA (High Response Linear Actuator) focus motor introduces unprecedented speed, precision and silence to the Sigma autofocus system. The HLA also offers enhanced after-performance focusing for sports photography and other moving subjects such as cars, planes or birds in flight, ensuring that the decisive moment is not missed.
