HOYA Variable Density II is an adjustable density filter with an ND range of 1.5 to 9 f-stops (ND3-400).

The difference with the previous HOYA variable density filter is the newly designed swivel structure with convenient button, allowing for better operation.~

WHY VARIABLE DENSITY FILTERS ARE IMPORTANT
Variable density filters are widely used because they can replace a set of solid ND filters, providing a range density that can be adjusted according to the desired exposure settings.
In photos, variable density filters reduce the shutter speed according to the photographer's intentions when the shutter speed cannot be reduced due to camera limits.
Variable density filters can also increase the amount of boke when shooting in superbright conditions, thus preventing the image from overexposing.
In video recording, it is critical to keep the shutter speed appropriate to the frame rate setting.
That is, to keep it equal to twice the frame rate for the best results.
This is because, unlike photography, an excessively fast shutter speed can create a jarring effect and produce afterimages that won't look good in the final video.
As you can see from the image below, unlike the still image, a video clip is made of a sequence of still images. With low shutter speed, each still image will be blurry but will look uniform in the video sequence.
On the contrary, a higher shutter speed will capture the solid and sharp object, but once in a video sequence, all the objects will appear separate, creating a shocking and unnatural-looking movement.
Using variable density filters, the shutter speed can be adjusted to the proper value to achieve that smooth, natural-looking motion requested in video shooting, as shown in the image below.

* When using the near filter or at maximum density, a dark cross-shaped pattern will appear in the image and cannot be eliminated.
This is a property of variable ND filters.

FEATURED FEATURES
HOYA Variable Density II incorporates a unique rotating frame construction consisting of fixed frame and rotating frame.
The rotating bezel sits wider compared to the fixed bezel size in order to minimize the risk of vignetting when used on wide-angle lenses.

As HOYA Variable Density II incorporates a complex rotating structure construction, bear in mind the risk of vignetting as follows:

  • APS-C size wide-angle lenses with a focal length of less than 13mm
  • Full-frame wide-angle lenses with a focal length of less than 24 mm

IMPORTANT FEATURES:

  • Lens Cap Compatibility: Due to the specific structure of the filter frame, HOYA Variable Density II may take a larger lens cap size than the size of the filter itself.
For example, 77mm HOYA Variable Density II can accept 82mm lens cap as shown in the image below.
  • For Longer Exposures: Without changing the aperture, HOYA Variable Density II gives you the freedom to change the shutter speed according to the desired effect.

Effective for motion blur effects like waterfalls, cars, or blurred panning to make the object stand out from the background.

FOR LARGER OPENINGS
It allows wider apertures in over-lighting conditions to be used to decrease the depth of field, literally focusing more attention on the subject.

PREVENTING OVEREXPOSURE
Even with the shutter speed of 1/8000 sec, a large aperture of f/1.4 or f/1.2 can cause overexposure.
With the HOYA Variable Density II filter, overexposure problems can be avoided by adjusting the light input.

TO RECORD VIDEO IN CINEMATIC APPEARANCE
The variable density filter is a must-have for video bloggers and professional video content creators.
Allow film/video cameras to set the proper exposures in bright lighting conditions to achieve a cinematic look.

Notes: The practical range of exposure and light transmission varies depending on the situation.
When using the near or MAX filter, a dark cross-shaped pattern will appear in the image and cannot be eliminated.
This is a property of the filter and all variable ND filters.
