Large pixels for high sensitivity and low noise
The new 12.1-megapixel full-frame back-illuminated Exmor RTM CMOS image sensor is a breakthrough in light gathering, connections and output optimisation. This enables ultra-fast readout speeds, superb image quality throughout the sensitivity range, wide 15-stop dynamic range and rolling shutter reduction, and the sensor offers focal-plane phase-detection AF.
Up to 8x more powerful BIONZ XRTM image processor
With the new sensor and unprecedented speed, the BIONZ XR image processing engine has also been developed and gives 8x more processing power. With a futuristic architecture, it delivers high-quality images faster for superlative photo and video, plus significantly improved camera interface responsiveness.
Stunning AF performance even at 4K 120p
The new full-frame Exmor R image sensor and innovative BIONZ XR image processing engine deliver precise, always-on AF for outstanding detail in space and time, as well as stunning 4K movies even at 120fps or in slow motion. With resolution and depth of field only allowed by a full-frame sensor, the results are incredible.
10-bit 4:2:2 recording
Record directly in-camera with the astonishing richness of 10-bit depth and 4:2:2 colour sampling, for incredibly superior flexibility in grading, post-processing and image composition.
All-Intra encoding available
In addition to Long GOP, All-Intra coding is available. Encodes each independent frame at bitrates up to 600Mbps and captures complex motion more accurately for recording on indoor/outdoor media and enabling more efficient editing work.
Superior quality and smaller files with XAVC HS
The new XAVC HS recording format uses HEVC/H.265 encoding to offer twice the compression efficiency of AVC/H.264 encoding, for superior image quality and smaller file sizes.
Our sensitivity offers an expanded ISO up to 409600
The famous sensitivity of this series reaches new peaks, with ISO range expanded for movies, from 80 to an incredible 409600 (standard range 80 - 102400). With advanced light capture and output optimisation, the 12.1-megapixel full-frame sensor delivers low noise throughout the sensitivity range and allows you to capture good images in near-total darkness.
S-CinetoneTM from high-end cinema camera colour science
The inclusion of Sony's acclaimed S-Cinetone look, which comes from the development of Cinema Line FX9 and CineAlta cameras such as VENICE, allows cinematic colour to be achieved directly in the camera. S-Cinetone has been optimised to deliver natural skin tones and mid-range colours, with smooth highlight roll-off, for stunning ungraded object representation in post-production as a workflow.
Gamma S-Log3, Gamut S-Gamut3.Cine, Pro Camcorders
The S-Log3 gamma curve and S--Gamut3.Cine color gamut, typical of professional camcorders, offer a wider dynamic range and easier color matching for a better post-production workflow.
HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma)
HLG simplifies HDR production, with footage for HLG-compatible BRAVIA TVs in-camera without complex post-production, giving smooth gradations in 10-bit colour depth.
Image quality improvements
The new BIONZ XR image processing engine offers improvements in colour reproduction, stability against different light sources, natural tonal gradation and roll-off, and rolling shutter reduction.
16-bit HDMI RAW output
For demanding post-production workflows, there is a 16-bit RAW output on HDMI connection to compatible external recorders, while XAVC HS 4K, XAVC S 4K or XAVC S-I 4K formats and proxy files are captured in-camera.
Efficient editing via proxy recording
When recording 4K movies with a high bitrate, HD proxies (8/10-bit depth) can be generated in the camera. Editing smaller proxy files reduces the burden on your computer and speeds up the workflow before final 4K production.
Fast Hybrid AF for Accuracy and Persistence
Wide-area AF uses intelligent tracking and phase-detection on the sensor that covers most of the frame. The result is high-precision and persistent AF performance with high-quality E-mount lenses, even when shooting moving subjects with shallow depths of field in 4K and at a frame rate of 120p.
Powerful focus control for solo shooting
With 7-level AF Transition Speed and 5-level AF Subject Change Sensitivity, it conveys creative intentions more effectively when changing subjects or in supported focus. A single touch activates AF, even in a manual focus operation.
Real-time Eye AF for movies
Real-time Eye AF uses AI for eye focusing accuracy, with performance improved by 30% on faces in profile or obscured. Eye tracking lets you focus on composition, even with reduced depth of focus.
Real-time tracking with intuitive touch operation
Real-time Tracking analyzes the subject's color, pattern, depth, and face information to track it. Touch Tracking automatically and intuitively tracks an object touched on the LCD screen.
In-body 5-axis image stabilization
A highly accurate image stabilization unit and gyro sensor are available, offering 5-axis optical image stabilization.
Active Mode for manual media shooting
The new Active Mode has better stabilization for movie shooting. To maintain image quality, the BIONZ XR processor accurately measures camera vibrations and optically compensates for them, enabling stable video even when shooting handheld, when space prevents the use of a gimbal, while walking, and in 4K resolution.
Digital Audio Interface: Clear Sound Recording
The digital audio interface with the Multi Interface (MI) Shoe offers a direct 24-bit input. The available settings are 2 channels 48 kHz/16 bits and, with the optional XLR-K3M adapter kit, 2 channels 48 kHz/24 bits and 4 channels 48 kHz/24 bits.
Unique heat dissipation for reliable recording
A unique Sony Σ-shaped graphite heatsink is built into the stabilization unit. It dissipates heat 5x more effectively for extended recording time, without interfering with image stabilization.
Comfortable video recording
In response to feedback from professionals, the MOVIE button has been moved to the top for better operability in any shooting position. The mode selector control and switching speed have also been improved.
High ISO sensitivity
With a wide standard ISO range of 80-102400 (expandable to 40-409600 for stills), the α7S III enables great creativity. The newly developed image sensor and processing algorithms produce even purer images and more natural textures than the previous α7S II model, even when shooting in near-total darkness.
Fast Hybrid AF for Photography
The fast, hybrid AF system is fast and accurate. With 759 focal-plane phase-detection sensors and 425 contrast-detection points spread across almost the entire image area, the a7S III quickly locates and tracks the subject across the entire frame.
Outstanding continuous shooting performance
Choose from a mechanical or electronic shutter for continuous burst shooting, with AF/AE tracking at up to 10fps. Capture decisive moments with over 1000 frames of continuous shooting in uncompressed RAW.

New HEIF format/HLG image capture modes
The HEIF image file format is supported, with better image quality and compression efficiency than JPEG, as well as 10-bit color. High Dynamic Range images can also be captured in HLG mode, for viewing on compatible TVs.
Highly sensitive AF for low-light focusing
Advances in the AF algorithm allow the a7S III to achieve autofocus in conditions as low light as EV-6, where subjects are barely visible to the naked eye.

5 GHz Wi-Fi compatible
In addition to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connectivity, 5GHz Wi-Fi connectivity is provided for remote operation, wireless preview, and faster, more stable data transfer for stills and video.
Wired LAN connectivity
For complex environments prone to interference or higher bandwidth requirements, 1000BASE-T wired LAN connectivity is available by simply plugging a compatible USB-Ethernet adapter cable into the camera's USB Type-C port.
Remote preview and shooting
Wired or wireless remote shooting is available from a PC or mobile device with Imaging Edge Mobile™ installed, for more efficient workflows and shooting in challenging environments.
