The α7R V features a new dedicated AI processing unit for significantly improved subject recognition, as well as still images with remarkable quality and resolution.
A new level of camera intelligence
State-of-the-art AI processing uses detailed information from human shapes and poses to significantly improve the accuracy of object recognition and to take full advantage of its potential resolution. Also, the recognition was extended to include several new objects, such as vehicles and insects.
Human Pose Estimation
The α7R V uses object shape data to recognise movement and sees an improvement of around 60% in human eye recognition. Human pose estimation uses human shapes and poses to recognize eyes, body and head position, and fixate and follow the subject, even if the face is away from the camera or wearing a mask.
Recognition of a wider range of objects
In addition to humans, animals and birds, the camera now recognises insects, cars, trains and planes and offers greater flexibility and reliability for film and stills. Heads and bodies are now recognized, in addition to eyes (real-time eye AF), in the definitions for humans, animals, and birds.
Improved WB control accuracy
The α7R V's AWB function evolves with the camera's AI capabilities. In addition to the "visible light and IR sensor" on the front of the body, the camera's AI processing unit allows you to achieve more accurate white balance in low light, such as when a subject is in shadow.
Excellence in α resolution
The output of the 35mm full-frame back-illuminated Exmor R™ CMOS image sensor, with approximately 61.0 million effective pixels, is processed in real time to the maximum limit by the BIONZ XR™ processing engine to deliver stunning detail in stills and movies.

The sensor is equipped with Sony image sensor technologies, with effective noise reduction, thanks to the back-illuminated structure, gapless on-chip design objectives, AR (anti-reflective sealing glass) coating and optical low-pass filter elimination.
Latest BIONZ XR processing engine
With up to eight times the processing power of its predecessor, the new BIONZ XR processes large volumes of image data, minimising latency and significantly increasing the camera's film and photo processing power.
Consistently accurate exposure and color
The latest BIONZ XR engine achieves better exposure control and accurate color reproduction. A new AE algorithm is able to detect the area of skin on faces and control exposure accordingly during shooting.
Selectable RAW image sizes and quality
The a7R V supports the lossless RAW format, with three selectable pixel counts - L (60M), M (26M) and S (15M). Me S sizes offer equal resolution across full-frame and APS-C fields of view for simpler post-production workflows.
Advanced 5-axis structural optical stabilization
The a7R V has been upgraded to offer up to 8 steps of stabilization on the frame for the first time in the a-series. This offers effective stabilisation for slow-shutter shooting in interiors or night scenes where it is preferable to avoid higher sensitivity.
Precise compensation at the pixel level
A new stabilization algorithm enables precise detection and control down to a single pixel, taking full advantage of the sensor's 61.0-megapixel resolution to bring out the finer details of the subject.
Creative Look supports a variety of expression
The Creative Look feature offers 10 presets that can be used unchanged or edited to create various looks that help creators perfect the ambience of their photos or movies in camera.
Pixel shift multiple capture reacts to changing conditions
Multiple pixel shift shooting takes advantage of the precise control of the body's image stabilization system. Capture up to 16 pixel-shifted images for composition on a computer for incredible resolution in a single image. Even small movements of each pixel can be detected and compensated for by PC software.
Real-time Recognition AF
The a7R V's AF system offers greatly improved performance, thanks to major advances in subject recognition. Deep learning technology supports powerful real-time recognition AF and more reliable real-time tracking, combined with higher hybrid and fast AF performance over a wider area.
Faster, more accurate wide-area AF
The immense processing power of the new BIONZ XR engine and updated algorithms result in noticeably improved AF performance. Up to 693 phase-detection points in a high-density array cover about 79% of the image area.
Precise AF with low EV -4.0 light
Recent AF algorithms enable high-precision low-light AF EV-4.0 in AF-S 3 mode. The a7R V features a focus priority mode that enables more reliable AF in low light or at smaller apertures.
Continuous shooting of up to 583 RAW images compressed at 10fps
Continuous shooting at up to 10 fps with full AF/AE tracking is possible with the mechanical or electronic shutter. The camera can capture up to 583 compressed RAW images at this speed.
Focus bracketing to capture the best image
The camera captures up to 299 images with focus points shifted sequentially, with user-customized intervals and sequences. Choose the right shot or post-process shots to create creative composites with incredible depth of focus.
Flicker suppression
Flicker from artificial lighting can be effectively suppressed, with "Anti-Flicker Capture" for stills or "Var Shutter" to fine-tune shutter speeds for flicker frequencies when shooting stills or movies.
Continuous DMF
When shooting with AF-C or AF-S autofocus, the lens's focus ring can be rotated to instantly switch to manual focus mode at any time. This makes it easy to quickly switch focus to a different subject.
High-quality 8K movie recording
The XAVC HS format enables high-quality high-resolution movie recording in 8K (7680 x 4320) at 24p (25p) with efficient HEVC/H.265 compression, taking full advantage of Sony lenses and the resolution provided by the sensor and full pixel readout. Even the smallest details of the object are faithfully captured.
Stunning 4K movie recording up to 60p (50p)
Full-frame and Super 35mm formats selectable for recording 4K movies. Full pixel readout in Super 35mm mode without the need for pixel binning makes 2.6x oversampling possible for 4K movies4. It supports XAVC S-I (All-Intra) or XAVC HS formats, as well as 10-bit 4:2:2 color sampling.
Real-time tracking for movies
Thanks to improvements in subject recognition, real-time tracking is now even better, automatically tracking specific subjects with precise focus, right down to the subject's eyes6.
Expressive S-Cinetone™
Based on CineAlta™ camera technology such as the acclaimed VENICE, S-Cinetone delivers essential mid-tones to ensure healthy-looking skin tones, smooth colours and stunning highlights.
S-Log3 gamma curve with 14+ points of latitude
The S-Log3 gamma curve enhances gradation characteristics from shadows to medium grey (18% grey), reaching more than 14 points of latitude for efficient editing.
Breath compensation for a consistent viewing angle
Breath compensation uses Clear Image Zoom technology to maintain a solid angle of view, suppressing potential changes due to focus shifts. Breathing metadata can be used in post-production.
Comprehensive film tools
The α7R V offers a variety of movie tools, such as a clear recording frame in the viewfinder, flexible exposure mode, WB adjustment during recording, shooting marks, and a movie self-timer.
Active mode for enhanced image stabilization
Active mode enables solid image stabilisation for handheld movie shooting. In addition to in-body stabilisation, lenses compatible with their own built-in image stabilisation10 combine with the camera body for highly effective control, even allowing for handheld telephoto shots.
Unprecedented monitoring flexibility
Sony's newly developed 4-axis multi-angle monitor combines the utility of a conventional tilting monitor with the flexibility of vari-angle side opening. It allows for greater shooting freedom by providing unlimited angle adjustment in both horizontal and vertical orientations.
High Detail Type 3.2 LCD Panel
The α7R V's LCD monitor features a 3:2 aspect ratio, with 2.1 million dots, touch operation, and a wide color gamut (DCI-P3 equivalent). An outdoor mode is provided for clear visibility in bright outdoor settings.
Highest resolution QXGA display in its class
The 9.44-million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder offers a 1.6x improvement in resolution, the world's best 0.90x viewfinder magnification, a 41° diagonal FOV, and 120fps resolution for minimal motion blur.
Effective heat dissipation for extended recording
The chamber has been completely redesigned to ensure effective heat dissipation and prevent overheating. It continuously records 8K video at 24p (25p) 10-bit 4:2:0 for approximately 30 minutes.
High reliability in challenging environments
For robust outdoor use, all frame joints, buttons and battery compartment cover are sealed. A lens lock button and cushioning around the mount also offer dust and moisture resistance.
