Nikon's powerful EXPEED image processing engine and advanced lens technologies minimise distortion, even when shooting at powerful zoom. The fast autofocus system allows you to record the action at a speed of up to 7 fps. And RAW compatibility lets you save and export uncompressed image files in the processing/editing program of your choice.
Any angle
Render incredible shots with the camera's high-resolution viewfinder and large multi-angle monitor. The ultra-high-definition electronic viewfinder (approximately 2,360,000 dots) shows a clear, detailed view of the shot, even in bright conditions. And the bright 3.2-inch, 921,000-dot LCD monitor can be tilted and rotated in virtually every direction. An eye movement sensor automatically switches from shooting mode through the monitor to shooting mode through the viewfinder when you bring the camera close to your face.
4K movies with super-telephoto lens
Capture high-level 4K/UHD video movies with stereo sound. Get close to launching a rocket. Shoot an eagle's first flight from a distant hidden location. Easily record movies in 4K/UHD format at 30p, or record in FHD (1080p) at frame rates of up to 60p. The camera supports a clear HDMI output, so you can output videos to an external location during recording.
In addition, the camera's built-in microphone jack allows you to use an external microphone for clearer sound. One of the camera's recording functions is super interval film, which allows you to create a quick sequence of changing landscapes and unique perspectives. Time-lapse shooting is ideal for recording celestial scenery, star trails, and the moon's passage across the night sky.
Stable images
Nikon Vibration Reduction compensates for camera shake. Get steady video movies and stills, even when shooting handheld at telephoto distances. Nikon's dual-detection optical Vibration Reduction (VR) system allows you to shoot with a shutter speed up to four stops slower than otherwise possible. Camera shake effects are minimized, even in dimly lit locations, and you can capture sharper images and movies without underexposure. Active Vibration Reduction mode provides a more stable image on the display and monitor, which is ideal when you're on the move. Whether you see a condor from the back of an off-roader or a whale that rises to the surface from the deck of a boat, you'll get the perfect shot.
Play with the stars
Get creative with the built-in shooting modes. Because there's so much more to it than great super-telephoto shooting than just getting closer. Shoot all phases of the moon with Moon mode, which optimises camera settings to capture sharp astronomical images. Get closer to shy nature and its fast movements with Birding mode. Leave the shutter open for up to 60 seconds with the Exposure B and Time shooting modes, ideal for night shots. Plus, you can overlay up to three photos to create unique images with Multiple Exposure.
Always find your target
Thanks to the large grip and well-placed controls, zoom adjustment is carried out quickly and smoothly. Regardless of what the sky reveals, the user will always be prepared. The camera's large grip allows you to hold it stably, and the side zoom control lets you zoom in with your thumb. When you press the reset zoom button, the lens retracts to wide, making it easier to capture subjects that have gone out of frame. This COOLPIX weighs less than a quarter of the weight of an SLR camera and includes a super-telephoto lens attached. Weighing just 1.4kg, it's much easier to handle when shooting handheld.
